Types of AC Servo Motor

Synchronous AC servo motors
Synchronous AC servo motors are characterized by their ability to operate at a constant speed, which is synchronized with the frequency of the supply current.

The rotor contains permanent magnets or a wound field that interacts with the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator windings, resulting in smooth and precise rotational motion.

Asynchronous (induction) AC servo motors
Asynchronous or induction AC servo motor operates based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, where the rotor is not magnetically synchronized with the stator’s rotating magnetic field.

The rotor lagging behind the stator’s magnetic field creates the torque necessary for rotation. The slip between the rotor and the stator field is what differentiates it from synchronous motors.

Single-phase AC servo motors
Single-phase AC servo motors operate on a single-phase alternating current (AC) supply. They use a stator and a rotor to generate a rotating magnetic field, which induces motion in the rotor.

The stator is equipped with windings that create a magnetic field when AC voltage is applied. The rotor, typically a squirrel-cage type, rotates due to the interaction with the magnetic field, resulting in precise movement.

Two-phase AC servo motors
Two-phase AC servo motors operate on a two-phase AC supply. They use two stator windings positioned at 90 degrees to each other to produce a rotating magnetic field, providing better control and efficiency.

The interaction between the magnetic fields generated by the two stator windings and the rotor creates precise rotational motion. This setup allows for more accurate control of speed and position.

Positional rotation AC servo motor
Positional rotation AC servo motors are designed to move to a specific angle or position based on control signals. They use a stator and a rotor system where the stator creates a magnetic field, and the rotor moves to align with this field, achieving precise positioning.

The stator is equipped with windings that generate a magnetic field when AC voltage is applied. The rotor, often coupled with positional feedback mechanisms like encoders, adjusts its position in response to control signals, ensuring accurate movement.

Continuous rotation AC servo motor
Continuous rotation AC servo motors are designed for continuous 360-degree rotation. They control speed and direction based on input signals, making them suitable for applications requiring constant motion.

The stator creates a rotating magnetic field when AC voltage is applied, and the rotor, usually of the squirrel-cage type, rotates continuously due to this interaction. Speed and direction are controlled via feedback mechanisms such as tachometers or encoders.

Linear servo motor
A linear servo motor converts electrical energy into linear motion rather than rotational motion. They use a stator and mover system where the stator generates a magnetic field, and the mover travels linearly along this field, resulting in precise linear movements.

The stator is equipped with windings that produce a magnetic field when AC voltage is applied. The mover, often equipped with linear encoders, moves precisely in response to control signals, ensuring accurate linear positioning.

Advantages of AC Servo Motor

Absolute precision: AC servo motor has the ability to control position and speed with extremely small deviations, ensuring that the output product always meets the standards. The closed-loop control mechanism helps the motor respond quickly and operate smoothly even when the load changes.

Flexible application in many types of machinery: With many different power and torque ranges, AC servo motors are suitable for a range of equipment such as: Automatic packaging machines, 6-axis industrial robots, CNC machines, labeling machines, sorting machines, etc.

Easy to connect and integrate the system: Modern AC servo motors often come with drivers that can flexibly connect to central control devices such as PLC, HMI or SCADA, supporting communication via popular industrial standards: Modbus, EtherCAT, CANopen…

Energy saving: Because the motor only operates exactly as required (not running continuously), it saves significant energy compared to conventional motors.

Fast response: Extremely fast response time thanks to closed-loop control mechanism and high-resolution encoder. Ensure precise movement as soon as the control command is received, limiting error-causing delays in high-speed production lines.

AC Servo Motor Speed Control Methods

AC servo motors offer three different speed control techniques: torque control, position control, and speed control.

Position control

This method allows the motor to follow a predetermined angular or linear path. This technique makes it possible to precisely control the motor's rotation to achieve the result. The feedback devices that are used to gather data are resolvers and encoders.

Torque control

It's aim is to regulate the motor's output torque, or the rotational force it applies. This technique guarantees accurate control over the motor's power output for tasks requiring constant torque levels.

Speed control

Maintaining a constant speed for the motor shaft is known as speed control. It is essential for applications requiring precise speed requirements, like conveyor belt systems in machining operations, because it allows the motor to be adjusted precisely in terms of velocity. AC servo motors use a variety of feedback systems and control algorithms to provide accurate speed control.

FAQ

Q: How do I choose the right AC servo motor for my application?

A: When selecting an AC servo motor, consider factors such as torque requirements, speed range, accuracy, feedback type, and the application's specific demands. Consulting with a motor manufacturer or a specialist can also help you make the right choice.

Q: What is the difference between an AC servo motor and a regular AC motor?

A: AC servo motors are designed for precise control of position, speed, and acceleration, with a feedback system for accuracy. Regular AC motors, on the other hand, are typically used for continuous and less precise operations without feedback mechanisms.

Q: Can AC servo motors be used in harsh environments?

A: Yes, AC servo motors can be designed with protective enclosures and cooling mechanisms to operate in harsh environments, such as high temperatures, dust, and humidity.
