A hollow cup motor is a type of permanent magnet DC motor where the traditional iron-core rotor is replaced by a lightweight, cylindrical rotor that resembles a "cup" or a basket. The hollow cup motor is one of the newest technology in DC servo motors. The deletion of of iron in the rotor eliminates iron losses (like hysteresis and eddy currents) and cogging torque.
Main benefits are 1) High Acceleration & Deceleration: Due to its extremely low inertia, it can start, stop, and change speed much faster; 2) Smooth Operation: Without cogging torque, the rotation is extremely smooth at high and at low speeds; 3) High Efficiency: The coreless design reduces energy losses, making it highly efficient, which is critical for battery-powered devices.
Typical application
Applications requiring fast response, smooth rotation, and compact size such as Medical devices (e.g., surgical power tools, infusion pumps), Robotics and drones as well Optical instruments etc.
